MOG is a music discovery platform that helps users enjoy their favorite tunes. The application pulls from a library of more than 14 million songs. Users can listen to their own radio stations, including 100% artist only stations. The user can also make adjustments to create the perfect mix of genres, artists or songs. Sharing is encouraged and users can pass their favorite songs or playlists to their friends. The site also boasts higher quality listening, with 320 kbps streaming. As the user listens, they can add more songs to their favorites list so they can return to the song or artist later. Playlists are created by dragging and dropping songs and can be shared or enjoyed any time the user wants. MOG was founded by David Hyman in June of 2005. The application started its life as a blog and music based social network. The application originally offered the MOG-o-Matic, which populated profiles with information about the music the user listened to. This service was later discontinued. MOG developed a partnership in 2007 with Rhapsody that allowed Rhapsody subscribers to access the application’s content through MOG. By December of 2009, MOG presented its own music subscription service.
In June 2012, it was announced that MOG has been acquired by Beats.
There are a number of applications that give users a way to enjoy streaming music online. MOG is another that comes with a few extra perks. Users can create stations for a single artist. Many other streaming music style applications require a mix of songs that feature various artists based around a theme or genre. For users who prefer to enjoy whole albums, this might make MOG an attractive alternative.
MOG maintains a trendy feel with stylish, unique graphics and a sleek design that gives it a modern appeal. The dark background highlights hints of blue and red. The user interface is primarily white with small album cover thumbnails accompanied by artist and album names. Playlists, new releases and other content is displayed in neat boxes so the user can easily explore their favorite songs and musicians without feeling overwhelmed.
A new user can join the MOG listening community by clicking the blue “Login with Facebook” button found near the top, left hand side of the homepage. A pop up box will appear and ask the user to login to Facebook if they have not done so already. The user must give MOG permission to access their account before proceeding. The site will also show the user who on their friends list are using MOG already after logging in. This is the only registration option currently available.
MOG offers users three subscription options to choose from. The first is a FreePlay account which costs nothing and includes the ability to listen to the entire MOG library with advertisements. The Basic account costs $4.99 per month and includes unlimited music and no ads. A Primo account is available for $9.99 per month and includes mobile access and unlimited music downloads. New users are automatically given a free account and can upgrade at any time.
